This residence combines a European exterior with an interior
reminiscent of a Canadian ski lodge and finishes with a mariner's touch. The
owners liked the stone of French provincial architecture, the vaulted and beamed ceilings and large fireplaces of ski lodges
they had visited in British Columbia, and the orderly, cozy feel of a sailing craft.
The famous granite quarries of nearby Barre supplied the thick stone for the exterior.
To give the roof texture and scale, slate shingles graduate in thickness and length.
Other fine details include cabinets and built-ins of jatoba and tropical mahogany reminiscent of teak and mahogany
bright work of ships. In the gable ends, thick textured stucco combines with
rustic woodwork to achieve an Alsatian half timber look. The main bathrooms have
large limestone tiles or honed black slate. In order to take advantage of striking
Mount Mansfield views while diminishing its scale from the approach, the home is nestled in a wooded hillside.
